Video of my trip to Exact Metrology! Watch some of the pieces get scanned and learn about the technology!

Second Update: 8/14/2025

I made the 2.5 hour trip to Cincinnati Ohio to meet with engineers at Exact Metrology to scan the Preston Mess Kit with all of their cool toys! The one they primarily used was a scanner with an arm attachment that the operator hovered over and around the pieces several times like a spray can. The device was able to take readings of every ding and uneven surface such as where the solder connected the two halves of the canteen! It was so cool watching it in real time. Do not worry though, there will not be any dents or imperfections in your kit! The engineers are going to work on CAD programming to fix those imperfections and create what is called a step file so the manufacturing side can create the appropriate dies for the steel stamping. I am working on editing the video today and will post it tomorrow for you to watch. Come back to this page tomorrow (8/15) to see the link.

First Update: 9/7/2025

I sought out quotes from various companies in the Buckeye state that have the capabilities to scan the kit with a 3D scanner and make the changes to update the kit such as a slightly flatter bottom on the canteen and cup and internal threads added to the spout for an early 20th century screw stopper. Are you ready for who is taking on the first phase?

drum roll please…….

I have an appointment with them next week to be there when the scanning is done and interview one of their engineers to discuss the process and show how this cool advancement in technology can be used to bring back artifacts of the past!
I know you are as just excited as I am and I can’t thank you enough for making this possible!
A suggestion has been made on the Campcrafter’s Guild and on my videos recently that a cookbook be compiled specifically with the size and abilities of the Preston Kit in mind and it being provided with the mess kit…I love it! If you have a recipe for me to try out on the kit and tweak it proportionally for the community cookbook please send it my way and I will look up unique historical recipes to try and include as well! Feel free to send modern recipes or historical ones but please provide the source so due credit can be given, even if it was grandmama’s custard recipe…your grandmamma deserves the limelight for her efforts to fill our tummies with deliciousness and love.Okay friends, things are rolling along! Expect another update next Friday OR the 22nd. I start back to school next week for professional development so much of my “free” time is coming to a close, but don’t worry, things are going to keep rolling along. Once the CAD work is done I can hand them of to the production team…next thing you know the first “Proof” will be made and the machines can be turned on to full production!

Don’t forget to join the Campcrafter’s Guild!:
